I wanted to try another pattern of stripes in the Philippine flag colors, this time it's for a 20mm lug width. Instead of thinner stripes of colors, I wanted a mix of thick and thin stripes.

As I mentioned in my previous pattern, note that this doesn't easily slip in between the lugs (unlike nylon straps). You'd have to remove the spring bars, then position the strap on the lug area, and then put the spring bars back. (Unless your watch has lug holes farther from the case like this J&G Academic)

I'd like to apologize ahead as well if the pattern might be a bit confusing. 😅

(Video to follow, maybe! )

Here's the link to the previous 18mm version I made:
How to Make a Crochet Watch Strap (Pattern for 18mm Lug Width

Tools and Materials:

  • Mercerized Cotton Yarn in any set of colors you like - They're more comfortable on the skin than the usual yarn. If you use anything thicker than this, it might not fit. If you use anything smaller, it might not be wide enough for an 18mm lug width.
  • Crochet Hook in 0.9mm to 2.0mm Size - I used 0.9mm but it snagged the yarn a bit, so better use the next size up. You may end up with a bigger strap if you use bigger hooks, so watch out for that.
  • An old watch buckle in 20mm.

Steps:

1. Using the yellow string, I'm making a long chain stitch using another strap as a reference for length. Because this pattern does not compress as much, no need to add 1 more inch. I made the mistake of adding 1 more inch and it ended up way too long.

2. Starting at the 4 chain back, make double crochet stitches going back all the way to the end of the chain. Hide the tail.

3. Add the next color (white) and make single crochet stitches all the way around (incorporate hiding the tail), adding 1 chain stitch in between single crochet stitched at the curve. Before you continue with the rest after the curve, make sure the curve lays down flat. Hide the tail before moving on to the next color.

4. Add the red string and make 3 chain stitches. On the next white single crochet stich, make double crochet stitches all the way to the other end. When you reach the curve, make 1 chain stitch, then make 2 double crochets at the next slot. Make another chain stitch, then another 2 double crochets in the next slot.

5. Incorporate the next color (blue) and make 1 chain stitch. Make 2 double crochet stitches on the next slot. Make another chain stitch, then another 2 double crochets in the next slot. Check to make sure the curve end lies flat. Make 1 more chain stitch, then continue to make double crochet stitches all the way to the end.

Make sure the curve is flat before moving on.

 6. When I was happy with the width, I incorporated the 20mm buckle. I did single crochets stitches around half of the spring bar, did a slip stitch to make space for the prong. I switched colors back to red and continued through the rest of the spring bar with single crochet stitches.

7. For the keepers, I made them both fixed, similar to how it is for nylon straps. They're all just chain stitches + single crochet stitches. For me, I made 10 chain stitches, but you can make more if you prefer the keepers to be bigger.

It ended up too long because I overestimated the length of the chain stitch
